Moving: the most important box you’ll pack
Pack a box of essential items you’ll need for the first few nights in your new home. It should include things that allow you to be comfortable in the midst of chaos! Label the box “Open First”.

Handy items to include in the box
Flashlight, change of clothing and towel for each member of the family, shower curtain, toiletry bag (shampoo, toothbrush, soap, etc.), toilet paper, medicines, vitamins, first-aid kit, scissors, garbage bags, snacks and bottled water. Don’t forget a box-knife for opening the rest of your boxes!
New contacts you’ll need
Create a list of contacts to use when you arrive at the new place. Include utility companies, internet provider, banks, doctors, post office and DMV office. Having this list will save you time and help get you get set up in your new home quickly.
Put all your important documents in a folder and add to the box. These can include birth certificate, marriage license, passport, wills, insurance papers, medical information, social security card, check book and address book.
Keys of all kinds, such as house keys and car keys, safety deposit box keys, and file cabinet keys should go into the box.
Include any jewelry that you wouldn’t want to lose or can’t replace.
Include your computer back-ups, disc and thumb drives, etc. in the box so they will be safe and you’ll know exactly where they are.
